While serving as Opinion Page Editor, the Association of Opinion Page Editors (AOPE) awarded “Best Series” to seven articles by Sue Diaz, mother of a US soldier who served in Iraq. The series ran in The Christian Science Monitor Opinion section between August 22, 2005 and June 30, 2006. The judges commented that these intimate columns about a mother’s concerns for her son at war “touch the heart” and have an “original approach” that is “engaging, compelling.”
The AOPE also gave a “community service” honorable mention for a package of commentary – editorial, cartoon, op-eds, and letters – published during and after Monitor correspondent Jill Carroll’s kidnapping and release in Iraq. The judges said these were “well done and informative without being too emotional or overdone.”
