I am a staff editor and writer for The Christian Science Monitor weekly international news magazine with more than 14 years of experience news and feature editing and writing, book reviews, and blogging.
I edit and contribute to a weekly Culture column that examines trends in music, television, art, and movies. I also write and edit capsule reviews of CDs, TV shows, pop fiction books, blogs, apps, and websites.
As a feature writer, I have written on a range of topics from the serious to the whimsical: climate change as art; profiles of people making a difference; the rise of urban farming. I learned three kinds of surfing in 24 hours in Southern California and how to play the Appalachian mountain dulcimer in Kentucky. I can write blog posts, SEOs, and photo captions in minutes that capture and own trending terms on Google and Yahoo. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are fun daily (hourly?) pastimes. I’ve written about Pinterest and host my own boards.
Since 2008 my beat has included food writing covering everything from celebrity chefs to mouth-watering recipes to people who are trying to forge a more sustainable food system. My July 11, 2011, 3,000-word cover story for The Christian Science Monitor magazine, “The Big Stir,” about America’s culinary renaissance, was one of three finalists for a 2012 James Beard food writing award.
Everybody needs to eat, even policy wonks and news junkies, so I produce a daily recipe blog called, Stir It Up! with 17 cooperating food bloggers on CSMonitor.com, and edit a weekly recipe e-mail newsletter for more than 9,000 subscribers.
I also write my own recipe and food-related blog, KitchenReport.net, which I sometimes share on my local Patch.com. I love local foods, farmers’ markets, and the whole farm-to-table trend, but I’m not above a bacon milkshake.
I teach food history webinars for Principia College. A four-week seminar, “An American culinary journey: from succotash to urban chickens,” included four 20-minute Powerpoint presentations with voice-over narration and four one-hour live class sessions. In November 2013, I taught a two-week webinar about holiday foods.
But it hasn’t been all fun and food. Before making the leap to the Monitor’s Features department, simultaneously supporting the Books section (where I helped to pioneer CSMonitor.com’s first feature blog, including podcast author interviews) and the Food section, I was the Western Region Editor in the National News department (aka the fire, water, and land beat) and I served for five years on the Editorial/Opinion page as the Assistant Opinion Page Editor, including a 10-month stint as the interim Opinion Page Editor, and helped to earn two award recognitions for that section.
